Abstract:
Measurements of inclusive and differential $\mathrm{Z}/\gamma^{*}$ production cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV in the muon final state are presented. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb$^{-1}$. The measured total inclusive cross section times branching fraction is $\sigma(\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p} \to \mathrm{Z X}) \times \mathcal{B}(\mathrm{Z} \to \mu^+\mu^-) =$ 1870 $\pm$ 2 (stat) $\pm$ 35 (syst) $\pm$ 51 (lumi) pb for the dimuon mass in the range of 60 to 120 GeV. The measured value agrees with next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD and next-to-leading cross section calculations. Distributions of the transverse momentum, the angular variable $\phi^{*}_\eta$, and the rapidity of muon pairs, and the transverse momentum of muons in dimuon events are measured. The data are corrected for detector effects and compared to simulations.
